NSK has developed a third-generation ultra-high-speed ball bearing for EV motors, which the company claims can operate at more than 1.8 million dm (a measure of bearing rotation performance).

NSK claims that this new type of bearing is the fastest grease-lubricated deep groove ball bearing used in electric vehicles in the world. Its development purpose is to expand the vehicle mileage and achieve higher energy economy, while being able to reduce the size of components such as motors to improve the internal space. Lighter components help increase the cruising range, and higher-output motors can increase the efficiency of such vehicles.

The bearings of the previous iteration provided 1.4 million dmN, and improvements in the product allowed it to be used in higher speed components.

In addition to the 28.5% increase in rotational performance, the bearing also adopts what is said to be the world's first cage design, which takes advantage of topology optimization. This can optimize the material layout in the design space and maximize the strength and weight of the bearing by eliminating materials that do not contribute to the durability or rigidity of the cage. NSK has shortened the development time of cages by using simulation technology to verify performance and production during the research and development stage.

The cage is made of a new high-rigidity resin material, which is said to be more effective than traditional materials in suppressing deformation during high-speed operation. The bearings are then filled with proprietary grease to reduce the chance of lubricant stirring and heat generation that may cause component failure.
